Career Opportunities

Whether you want to work in the public or private sector, this programme is for you.
With this diploma, you can apply for positions as an engineer, a data scientist or a lecturer-researcher (after a PhD).

Introduction

MFA Mathematics

Objectives

This programme provides you with in-depth and specialised training by developing the reflexes of a future researcher in mathematics: a deep understanding of how theories and proofs are articulated, and the ability to understand, present and appraise mathematical texts.
During the second year, you can choose to specialise in various fields at the crossroads of algebra, analysis, geometry and probability.
Afterwards, you will be able to prepare a doctoral thesis in Mathematics.

Highlights

A strategic discipline
Smartphones, computers, bank cards, artificial intelligence, aircraft, cars... mathematics is everywhere. It is used to meet major technological and environmental challenges, and to measure the economic stakes facing the planet.
Research in fundamental and applied mathematics, for example, is helping to solve problems relating to the environment, sustainable development, energy and climatology. There is an increasingly pressing demand from society for risk prevention and management. To meet this demand, we need to develop tools for obtaining reliable short- and medium-term forecasts, so that we can accurately anticipate extreme events (cyclones, earthquakes, tsunamis, etc.). Mathematicians play a central role here.
They are also called upon by doctors to optimise the treatment of serious illnesses or surgical procedures, and by geneticists for genome sequencing, etc.

A field that's recruiting
The latest study on the socio-economic impact of mathematics in France estimates that 9% of all jobs in France are affected by mathematics.
Mathematics graduates have an excellent record of professional integration: according to national figures, confirmed by our local surveys, over 95% of Master's graduates have a job. We are proud of their high job satisfaction rate (85%), as well as the fact that they are well suited to the training they have received.

Places

Nantes

In Nantes, the University is organised into four major campuses along the Erdre River, crossing the city from north to south to the Ile de Nantes on the Loire River.
The programme courses are located on the Lombarderie Campus which is a wooded area well served by public transportation.
Nantes (600,000 inhab.) is located close to the Atlantic Ocean and is regularly rated as one of the most pleasant French cities to live in. Thanks to its beautiful parks, efficient public transport and other policies for sustainable development, Nantes has been awared the
status of European Green Capital.
